A Fusion of the Past and Future…

Inspired by the retro-futurism of posters and advertisements of the 40’s and 50’s, this design sought to capture the bright blushing hope of advancements in nuclear technology. It was painted (by Izzy Haines) using digital brushes in Photoshop, with reference of one of the reactor models, and the character was loosely based on actress and singer Doris Day.

When around the team at Astral, it’s impossible not to get swept into the giddy celebrations of seeing sci-fi coming to life. The media that inspires them has been influential in their creative and aesthetic decisions, and, noticing this, I thought it appropriate to call upon those influences for their merchandising. With compact designs and user-friendly operational systems for easy deployment, the Astral Systems reactor invokes a kind of accessible DIY approach to nuclear technologies. I saw an empowerment in this not just on a corporate level, but a personal one, where more and more people can access the benefits of such technology, especially in the domain of nuclear medicine. And though we are far from a world where we all go out and haul fusion reactors into shopping trolleys and set them up in the garage, I couldn’t help but imagine a future where that just might be the case! And in that future, there’s a chance you’d see something like this poster plastered all around your suburb.

The poster as seen in the foyer of Astral’s Bristol headquarters, next to one of the reactors.
